DONATE TO NEEDY IN CHECK-OUT LANE

Honolulu grocery shoppers can make an in-store donation to fight hunger in the next two months.

Under the annual "Check-out Hunger" campaign that starts Wednesday, shoppers in a check-out lane can purchase coupons that will be good for a donation to Hawaii Foodbank.

"Participating in the 'Check-out Hunger' program is an easy way for every one to help Hawai'i's needy families," said Gerald Shintaku, general manager of Kraft Foods Hawaii, which helped kick off the campaign last week with a $5,000 donation to the Foodbank.

Last year's program raised more than $160,000, which helped provide more than $3 million worth of food to people in need. This year's campaign runs through Jan. 8.

Participating stores include Times Supermarkets on O'ahu, Safeway, Tamura's Market at Wahiawa and Hau'ula, Tamura Supermarket in Wai'anae, Tamura's Fine Wine & Liquors, Kokua Market Natural Foods and KTA Super Stores on the Big Island.

A woman indicted Oct. 24 by an O'ahu grand jury surrendered Saturday at the main police station and was booked for first-degree criminal property damage stemming from a Dec. 5, 2005, incident at the Waikiki Shell parking lot.

Maria D. Bolter, 39, was released after posting $35,000. She has a court appearance scheduled Thursday at District Court.

Bolter is charged with damaging a vehicle.
