The Rainbow Wahine soccer team said goodbye to its seniors and hello to the conference title after a 7-0 win over Idaho yesterday.

Hawai'i won its third Western Athletic Conference title behind a hat trick by Kelli-Anne Chang and two goals apiece by junior midfielder Taryn Fukuroku and sophomore forward Ambree Ako to close out the regular season at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium, often playing in a downpour in front of 770 rain-soaked fans.

"I thought they played brilliantly; out of this world," Hawai'i coach Pinsoom Tenzing said. "They put the game away early and it allowed us to play the entire team."

Seniors Jessica Domingo, Shawn Higa, Koren Takeyama, Lehua Wood and Aimee Watanabe played their last games in the WPSS, but the Rainbow Wahine (13-4-2, 6-1-0 WAC) continue on as the top seed in the WAC tournament where it receives a first-round bye. The Rainbow Wahine have yet to win the WAC tournament, which would give them an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Tenzing said he's "really, really sad" to see this group go.

"This is the lot that turned everything around," he said.

"I'm sad, of course," Domingo said. "I want to thank the fans for staying even if it was a rainy day. It's definitely a game I'll never forget.

"It was a good win because in the past, if we knew it was an easier team we would let down. But we came out on fire."

Hawai'i takes its school-record tying 13 wins to the WAC Tournament in Boise, Idaho, Thursday through Sunday.

The game was called with 15 minutes, 5 seconds left because of the inclement weather. Games are considered official if 70 or more minutes pass.

Fukuroku scored her first goal in the 14th minute on assists from freshman defender Nicole Mikula and Ako.

"We just wanted to win it for the seniors," Fukuroku said. "They've been the heart and soul of the team."

Mikula brought the ball up the field after winning a hard tackle just beyond midfield and passed a through ball to the left for Ako, who passed the ball across the 6-yard box to Fukuroku.

Fukuroku scored again less than a minute later on another assist from Ako. Takeyama lofted the ball to Ako from near the center circle and Ako broke free in the left side of the 18-yard box but opted to pass to Fukuroku who was open on the right inside the 6-yard box.

Fukuroku's second goal broke the school record for team goals in a season of 51 (2003). Hawai'i has scored 57 goals this season, led by 12 goals apiece by Fukuroku and Ako.

"It was a big confidence booster," Fukuroku said. "It's so important to get that bye, because then we don't have to play in the cold. We're putting up numbers on the (scoreboard) like crazy. Hopefully we can keep that going."

Ako scored on a cross from Takeyama, who beat a defender up the right side of the field and crossed it to Ako, who controlled it and sent a high shot off the side of her left foot into the left netting in the 19th minute.

Chang scored on an assist from Mikula, who sent a long ball up the field for Chang. Chang controlled it, cut back to her left to beat a Vandal, then shot a low ball into the goal in the 31st minute.

Ako scored her second goal after receiving a pass from Takeyama, cutting to the right to beat the goalkeeper and shooting into the open goal in the 48th minute.

Chang scored again in the 53rd minute off assists from sophomore Larilyn Alota and Fukuroku on another play up the gut of the Vandals defense. Chang scored her third goal on an assist from sophomore Vanessa Bailey in the 67th minute.

"We knew it was the last weekend at home," Chang said. "We knew it would be emotional."
