Paniolo the focus of two hula workshops

Advertiser Staff

To help teachers, students and the community prepare for The Great Waiomina Centennial Celebration's focus on paniolo heritage and the history of place, Waimea Middle School's Ike Hawaii program on the Big Island will present a pair of free hula workshops for experienced dancers:

  • A Hula Pahu Workshop, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Nov. 14, at the historic Anna Ranch Heritage Center's Tea House. Kumu hula Keala Ching will teach a hula pahu set to "Lanikepu," which is a chant about the Waimea hillside near the Hawaii Preparatory Academy campus.

  • A Hula Auana Workshop, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Nov. 21, at Thelma Parker Memorial Gym. Auhea Puhi, a teacher and advisor at Kanu o ka Aina New Century Public Charter School and member of a Waimea ranching ohana, will teach a hula set to "Waiomina," which is a mele written by Helen Lindsey Parker telling the story of Waimea's most famous Hawaiian cowboys going to Wyoming in 1908 and winning the world championship of roping.
