KFVE to launch 6:30 p.m. broadcast Jan. 7

KFVE, known popularly as K5 The Home Team, will launch a 6:30 p.m. weekday newscast starting Jan. 7.

"We're doing this because there are so many people on the road, picking up kids at practice, or fixing dinner at home," said John Fink, general manager for KFVE and sister station KHNL. "By giving viewers an early evening newscast in a unique time period, we can better serve their need for 'live, local, late-breaking news,' " said Fink.

"K5 News at 6:30 p.m.," as the new 30-minute program will be called, will be anchored by Stephanie Lum, with Sharie Shima doing weather and Jason Tang handling sports. Lum presently co-anchors the 9 p.m. news on KFVE with Walter Makaula and also reports for KHNL.

KHNL, an NBC affiliate, has a planned lunchtime report at 11 a.m. weekdays in the works beginning Dec. 3, hosted by morning co-anchor Kristine Uyeno. This will give KFVE and KHNL additional exposure at times when other affiliates are not currently producing competing news programs.

"We're doing this as part of our effort to give the people what they want, when they want it," said Fink.
