Dennis Lajola and Sascha Heinemann moved on to the main draw of the $15,000 Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Futures tournament, which begins this morning at the resort's Kohala Tennis Garden.

Lajola, 18, from 'Aiea, advanced by beating University of Hawai'i sophomore Andreas Weber, 7-5, 6-4. Weber is 28th in the ITF preseason college rankings. The 2007 Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year became the first Rainbow to qualify for the NCAA Championship last spring.

Lajola spent his high school years at Mainland tennis academies and training with the USTA's High Performance team. He has committed verbally to attend UH, and is awaiting acceptance.

Heinemann, the 2006 WAC Freshman of the Year for UH, is No. 50 in the preseason ITA rankings. He defeated Laurent Colombo of France, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to the main draw for the second straight year.

In earlier matches, Weber beat Australia's Sean Wheatley, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4, and Bulgaria's Nikola Petrov, 6-4, 5-3, retired. Heinemann and Lajola received first-round byes. Heinemann, seeded fourth in the qualifying, then defeated Great Britain's Matthew Short, 6-2, 6-4. Lajola beat American Aaron Tada, 6-1, 6-0.

Matches begin at 10 a.m. today through Sunday's finals. The top seed is American Nicholas Monroe, ranked 356th in the world this week. Hawai'i's Chris Lam (630) is seeded seventh. Former Hawai'i high school champions Malino Oda and Ikaika Jobe (791) are also in the main draw, Oda by wild card.

Lam plays American Trent Aaron at 10 a.m. today on Court 7. Lam is also scheduled to play doubles on the same court later in the day. He and partner Christoph Palmanshofer are seeded second. Jobe and Kaua'i's Brad Lum-Tucker play the final match of the day on Court 1, against Oda and Nicholas Moxley, who are the Waikoloa pros. Hawai'i's Henry and Jim Somerville, 43-year-old twins who received a wild card into doubles, are scheduled to play third on the Stadium Court.

Ohana Day will be Saturday at 8 a.m. Players of every age are invited to participate in on-court activities and clinics, watch the pros play and enter the Prize Giveaway.

The first 50 attendees receive a complimentary USTA Futures T-shirt.

Qualifying for the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Honolulu Futures begins Saturday at UH. That main draw begins a week from today.
