Maui, Big Island series successful

By Stacy Kaneshiro

Hawaii Winter Baseball will return to action Thursday after a three-day break that started yesterday.

The Honolulu Sharks and West Oahu CaneFires concluded their series in Hilo over the weekend, although Sunday's series finale was canceled because of rain.

Several weeks ago, the North Shore Honu and Waikiki BeachBoys played there. The Big Island was the second Neighbor Island series for HWB, which earlier played on Maui. Both islands had teams in the original HWB from 1993 to 1997.

Hervy Kurisu, HWB president, said the Maui and Big Island series were successful, but said it was too early to determine if the league will return for more series next year.

"We want to go back, but we have to wait and see," Kurisu said.

While there are no games today and tomorrow, the players will be occupied. All four teams will be taking a private tour of the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial this afternoon, Kurisu said.

Besides playing games, the players have been involved in community activities. Last week, six players visited Solomon Elementary to give a mini clinic and have lunch with the students, Kurisu said. Yesterday, some players went to Roosevelt to visit a Spanish-language class.

Also last week, some of the coaches went on a shark fishing trip, but no sharks were caught, Kurisu said.
