HIGH SCHOOLS
Big Island football champs to be settled

Advertiser Staff

The Big Island Interscholastic Federation will settle its Division I and Division II football champions and state tournament berths this weekend.

On Friday, first-round champion Kealakehe will host second-round champion Waiakea at 7 p.m. for the Division I title.

Combined with Kea'au's victory against Hilo on Friday, Waiakea forced a playoff by beating Kealakehe, 28-27, that same night. Although Waiakea and Kea'au each finished the second round with a 3-1 record, Waiakea's overtime win against the Cougars several weeks ago was the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Meanwhile, Hawai'i Prep forced a Division II playoff with a 21-14 victory against Kamehameha on Saturday to win the second round title. The teams will play again at 7 p.m. Saturday at Kamehameha for the overall championship.

Kealakehe and Kamehameha are hosting the playoffs because of the league's second tie-breaker. Since in both cases the teams split the regular-season meetings (head-to-head tiebreaker), the next tie-breaker is point-differential of their wins, according to BIIF football coordinator Lyle Crozier. Kealakehe beat Waiakea 54-35 in the first round; Kamehameha beat HPA, 27-7, in the first round.

The winners qualify for their respective state tournaments. The BIIF's Division I champion will host a first-round game on Nov. 17. The Division II champion will travel to O'ahu next week to play the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Conference (Division II) champion.

The OIA White championship game between Kaimuki and Roosevelt is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday at Aloha Stadium. Following at 8 p.m. is the Red title game between Wai'anae and Leilehua.

The Red third-place game between Kapolei and Farrington for the OIA's third and final state berth will be played Saturday at Waipahu. That game will kick off 25 minutes after the end of the White JV championship game between Nanakuli and Waipahu, set for 4 p.m.

The OIA Red JV championship game between Farrington and Wai'anae is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Wai'anae.

KAMEHAMEHA MOVES UP TO NO. 5 IN NATION

Kamehameha's girls volleyball team moved up two spots to No. 5 in the latest prepvol leyball.com national rankings.

The Warriors completed their season with their third straight state championship and an overall record of 44-2, with the only losses coming to preseason No. 1 Assumption (Louisville, Ky.) and current No. 22 'Iolani (33-6-1).

The four teams ahead of Kamehameha are, in order, Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), Westlake (Austin, Texas), Amarillo (Texas) and Assumption.

The latest rankings were released Thursday, before Kamehameha's first state tournament match. Punahou, Kahuku, Roosevelt and Moanalua each received honorable mention.
