Baseball: U.S. shuts out Mexico in World Cup, 3-0

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Jayson Nix had a two-run RBI single in the fifth inning to lead the United States to a 3-0 win Wednesday over Mexico at the 37th Baseball World Cup.

Japan routed South Africa 11-1 and Panama beat Spain 5-0 in other Group A play.

Osmani Urrutia's home run in the bottom of the 10th lifted Cuba to a 3-2 win over Australia in Group B. The Cubans tied it with two outs in the bottom of the ninth on a homer by Frederich Cepeda.

In Group B, the Netherlands routed Thailand 16-0, South Korea shut out Canada 5-0 and Venezuela blanked Germany 8-0.
