How to get small-business grants

The High Technology Development Corp. will hold a series of conferences next week to show small businesses how to compete for more than $2 billion in research and development grants.

The grants are awarded through the federal Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer Research programs. Recent recipients of federal grants include Oceanit, Hawai'i Biotech, Trex Hawai'i and Kona Blue Water Farms.

The conferences begin at 7:30 a.m. each day. The schedule is as follows:

  • Nov. 13, Sheraton Waikiki Hotel

  • Nov. 14, Wailea Beach Marriott Hotel on Maui

  • Nov. 15, Hilton Kaua'i Beach Resort

  • Nov. 16, Waikoloa Beach Marriott on the Big Island

    NANOPOINT RECEIVES $1.5 MILLION

    Honolulu-based Nanopoint Inc. received $1.5 million in venture capital from Advantage Capital Partners during the third quarter, according to the PricewaterhouseCoopers MoneyTree report. The technology company is developing cellular imaging products for disease research.

    San Ramon, Calif.-based AGIS received $400,000 in venture capital from Advantage Capital in the quarter. AGIS, which was formerly known as AssistGuide, was founded in Hawai'i.


    KAMAKURA CLOSES HONG KONG DEAL

    Kamakura Corp., a Honolulu-based software maker, said Dah Sing Bank of Hong Kong had licensed its enterprisewide risk management software system.

    Kamakura said Dah Sing will use the software for analysis of interest rate and credit risk management.


    REIT'S NET INCOME FALLS $16.8M

    HRPT Properties Trust, a Newton, Mass.-based real estate investment trust whose holdings include 17 million square feet of industrial and office space on O'ahu, said net income available for common shareholders fell to $16.8 million, or 8 cents a share, during the third quarter from $22.1 million, or 11 cents, a year earlier.

    The company said funds from operations were $62.9 million compared with $62 million in the year-earlier period. It reported 92.8 percent of its holdings was leased at the end of the quarter. That compared with 93.4 percent a year prior.


    KFVE TO BEGIN 6:30 P.M. NEWSCAST

    KFVE-TV will launch a 6:30 p.m. weeknight newscast in January, KHNL/KFVE General Manager John Fink announced.

    The show, scheduled to launch Jan. 7, will be 30 minutes long and will be anchored by current KHNL News 8/K5 News at Nine anchor Stephanie Lum. The newscast will include weather with chief meteorologist Sharie Shima and sports with sports director Jason Tang.


    OFFICE MAX TO OPEN IN LAHAINA

    Office Max has signed a lease agreement to open a store at the Lahaina Gateway Center early next year.

    The lease was signed with shopping center owner Bilarjo LLC, and CB Richard Ellis was the leasing agent.

    It is the second Office Max retail store on Maui. The other store is in the Maui Marketplace in Kahului.
