Big Island man indicted in 2005 traffic death

HILO, Hawai'i — A 45-year-old Waimea man has been indicted in connection with a 2005 traffic death in Hilo.

A Hilo grand jury on Wednesday indicted Bill Maclean on a charge of first-degree negligent homicide. He allegedly was operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol in a collision that caused the death of 65-year-old William Alika Travis on Dec. 31, 2005.

Hilo police said Travis was on the shoulder of Hawai'i Belt Road near the Wainaku Scenic Point when a 2000 Ford pickup truck traveling south ran off the right side of the road, struck Travis and overturned.

Police said speed and drug use were believed to be factors in the crash, and arrested the driver on suspicion of negligent homicide and other charges including driving under the influence of an intoxicant, promotion of a detrimental drug, promotion of a dangerous drug, and five counts of promotion of a harmful drug.

Maclean has a half-dozen convictions for speeding over the past decade, and has continued to rack up speeding citations even after the fatal 2005 crash, according to District Court records.

Maclean was found guilty of speeding last June and again last July in connection with separate citations issued in May of this year.

If convicted of first-degree negligent homicide in the 2005 crash, Maclean faces up to 10 years in prison.
