LAHAINA, Maui — A 58-year-old Ohio man died yesterday after being pulled to shore while swimming off Ka'anapali.

Randy Tschantz of Liberty Township was swimming near Black Rock when he was seen struggling in the water around 10:20 a.m., said Maui police Capt. Charles Hirata. Bystanders brought Tschantz to shore and tried to revive him.

Tschantz was taken by ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1 p.m. An autopsy was scheduled to determine the cause of death.

Hirata said the man had a history of heart problems that may have contributed to his death.
