This month workers for Waste Management Inc. will be lining a 5.5-acre municipal solid waste cell at Waimanalo Gulch Landfill with a state-of-the-art material designed to protect the surrounding environment.

The high-density polyethelyne liner was manufactured specifically for Waimanalo Gulch to ensure that the landfill stays in compliance with government regulations, Waste Management said. The material is made to withstand deterioration from liquids, gases and municipal solid waste.

Once the cell has been lined, the area will be ready to accept waste. The cell is the last municipal solid waste cell being constructed under existing permits at Waimanalo Gulch.
