Tadd Fujikawa will get a chance to follow up his remarkable Sony Open in Hawai'i performance. The 16-year-old professional will be given the Friends of Hawai'i Charities exemption for the 2008 Sony. An official announcement is expected today.
While Paul Goydos won the Sony in January at Waialae Country Club, Fujikawa stole the spotlight by becoming the youngest in 50 years to make a PGA Tour cut. His charge into the weekend was punctuated by an eagle on the final hole Friday, followed by a big uppercut and an even bigger grin.
Fujikawa, who is only 5 feet 1, ultimately tied for 20th and had to turn down more than $50,000 to retain his amateur status. That changed in July when he turned pro. He has played in seven pro events since, across four tours, and has yet to make another cut.
The Moanalua High School junior qualified for this year's Sony by shooting a 67 at Waialae to win the lone amateur spot. Last year, he became the youngest in history to play in the U.S. Open.
