Hawai'i junior golf takes on Japan in the inaugural USA Hawai'i-Japan Junior Cup, a Ryder Cup-style competition that opens today 10 a.m. with a Junior Am at Waikoloa's Kings' Course. The teams play 4-ball matches tomorrow, from 11:30 a.m., and foursomes Saturday. There will be 22 singles matches Sunday, starting at 7 a.m., to conclude the event.

Each team has 13 boys and nine girls, between the ages of 15 and 18. Hawai'i's players were chosen based on their performances in the Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association, with Hilo's Kimberly Kim — who now lives in Arizona — given an exemption.

The Hawai'i team also includes state high school champion Anna Jang, Alika Bell, Kristina Merkle, Alex Ching, Elyse Okada, Henry Park and Cyd Okino.

Mayors' Challenge Cup: The inaugural Mayors' Challenge Cup will conclude this weekend at Ala Wai Golf Course when Honolulu takes on Kaua'i. Each team is made up of 12 amateurs, with three Open Division men (Championship, A and B), three senior men, three super senior men and three women. Team points are won based on a 36-hole, low-net individual stroke play format.
