Rainbow Warriors lose to San Diego in Nash's debut

By Dayton Morinaga

The Nash era got off to a thrilling — but ultimately frustrating — start tonight.

Gyno Pomare made one of two free throws with 2.2 seconds remaining to give San Diego a 73-72 victory over the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team.

A crowd of 4,623 at the Stan Sheriff Center watched the Rainbow Warriors lose their first game with Bob Nash as head coach.

Hawai'i had possession of the ball in the closing seconds, but Pomare made a steal and then was fouled.

He made the first free throw, missed the second, and Hawai'i could not get off a final shot.

Hawai'i played without senior point guard Matt Gibson, who was not in uniform because of an injured left knee.

In the absence of Gibson, the 'Bows went with a makeshift starting lineup that featured senior Bobby Nash at point guard and sophomore Bill Amis at power forward.

Amis contributed six points and five rebounds in the first half, including a tip-in basket at the buzzer that cut USD's lead at intermission to 40-33.

The Toreros led by as many as 14 in the first half behind the shooting of Brandon Johnson. He scored 13 in the first half, including 3 of 3 from 3-point range.

Hawai'i caught the Toreros at 51-51 on a tip-in by Nash, and the game stayed close for the final 10 minutes.

The 'Bows took their first lead of the game at 72-70 when Riley Luettgerodt hit a layup with 46 seconds remaining.

Bobby Nash led the 'Bows with 22 points and nine rebounds.

Johnson scored 19 to lead the Toreros.

Hawai'i will play another home game next Friday against perennial Big Ten contender Illinois.
