Fujikawa receives exemption for Sony Open in Hawaii

Advertiser Staff

Tadd Fujikawa officially received a sponsor's exemption to play in the 2008 Sony Open in Hawai'i Jan. 10-13 at Waialae Country Club.

Fujikawa made golf history at last year's Sony Open when he became the youngest to make the cut at a PGA Tour event in nearly 50 years.

His impressive play positioned him as high as eighth place in the third round. He eventually finished tied for 20th place.

Fujikawa, who turned professional in July and has yet to make a cut in seven professional events, will compete with 143 of the world's leading golf professionals for the $5.3 million purse.

Gov. Linda Lingle, the Friends of Hawai'i Charities and Sony Corporation made the announcement today.

"Tadd captured our imagination at last year's Sony Open, and has been an outstanding role model and ambassador for Hawai'i," said Lingle. "Having Tadd return to the Sony Open will allow him to continue to showcase his talents as a professional athlete, while providing valuable, worldwide exposure for Hawai'i."

"Tadd thrilled local fans with his exceptional play earlier this year, and he continues to have tremendous support from the Hawai'i community in his professional golf pursuits," said Anthony R. Guerrero Jr., president of Friends of Hawai'i Charities.

This is the first announcement for exemptions. Future announcements for exemptions may be forthcoming.
