Veterans Day events start Sunday

Sunday is Veteran's Day, a federal and state holiday that is celebrated on the same day as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world.

It always falls on Nov. 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I.

In Hawai'i, the event is marked by a series of public ceremonies.

They include:

The O'ahu Veterans Council hosts the Veterans Day Ceremony at the National

  • Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl at 10 a.m. Sunday. Lt. Gen. John Brown III, Commanding General of the U.S. Army Pacific, will make the keynote address.

  • The 2007 Governor's Veterans Day Ceremony will be held at 1:15 p.m. Sunday at the Hawai'i State Veterans Cemetery at Kane'ohe. The event is themed "What is an American Veteran?" and will begin with a musical prelude by the

    Hawai'i Army National Guard's 111th Army Band. Gov. Linda Lingle and Maj. Gen. Robert Lee will address the audience an participate in the placing of the wreath at the Memorial Plaza Monument to commemorate Veterans Day. A parade of flags and a presentation of lei by veterans organizations also

    will be part of the program. Civilian attendees are asked to wear aloha attire and military attendees are asked to wear service dress.

  • The Battleship Missouri Memorial will host a salute to all veterans, past and present with a sunset ceremony on Ford Island, Pearl Harbor. Events begin at 4:45 p.m. Sunday aboard America's last battleship. Sponsored by the USS Missouri Memorial Association. The keynote speaker will be Lt. Gen. John Goodman,Commander, U.S.Marine Corps Forces, Pacific. Guest speakers include Tobias Langcaon, veteran USS Missouri crewmember and Evelyn Poss, executive director, USS Houston.
