HILO
State veterans home to have grand opening

Advertiser Staff

A grand opening celebration will be held at noon Monday in Hilo for the Yukio Okutsu Veterans Home — Hawai'i's first state veterans home.

Some 500 guests are expected to attend the event at the 95-bed veterans nursing home with adult day health services.

The home will be the fourth facility operated by Hawaii Health Systems Corp. in the East Hawai'i region. Avalon Health Care Inc. has been contracted to manage the daily operations of the home.

The new facility is named for Hilo's Yukio Okutsu, who, as a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, was awarded the Medal of Honor for his courage in Mount Belvedere, Italy, on April 7, 1945.

His widow, Elaine Okutsu, will attend the celebration and will be presented with a Medal of Honor Flag on behalf of her late husband.
