Volleyball: U.S. women stop Thailand in World Cup

KUMAMOTO, Japan — Tayibba Haneef-Park scored a team-high 17 points as the United States rallied from a game down today to defeat Thailand and stay undefeated at the volleyball Women's World Cup.

Danielle Scott-Arruda added 15 points to help the Americans to the 21-25, 25-19, 25-11, 25-13 win and a 7-0 record.

Honolulu's Robyn Ah Mow-Santos (McKinley, University of Hawai'i) started at setter for the U.S. and scored five points on two kills, two blocks and an ace. Honolulu's Lindsey Berg (Punahou) also played at setter for the Americans.

"The players worked very hard today," said U.S. coach Lang Ping. "I made some substitutions as we have some injuries. There are still four difficult games to go and we must concentrate on each match."

The Nov. 2-17 tournament features 12 teams bidding for three berths at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The men's tournament will also be held in Japan from Nov. 18-Dec. 2.

In other matches, European champions Italy stayed tied with the U.S. at 7-0 with a 25-13, 25-13, 25-5 win over Kenya, which has yet to win a match.

Serbia improved to a 6-1 record with a 25-15, 25-15, 25-23 win over Peru while Brazil eased past South Korea 25-15, 25-17, 25-17 to keep pace at 6-1.

Cuba downed the Dominican Republic 25-13, 25-27, 25-23, 25-18 to improve to 5-2.
