Baseball: United States beats Japan in World Cup, 5-1

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Delwyn Young hit a three-run homer in the first inning to lead the United States to a 5-1 victory today over Japan at the 37th Baseball World Cup.

The Los Angeles Dodgers minor leaguer helped the U.S. improve to 3-1.

In other Group A play, Mexico defeated South Africa 13-3, Panama blanked Italy 6-0 and Taiwan beat Spain 8-4.

In Group B action, Canada shut out Germany 10-0, the Netherlands prevailed over Venezuela 7-4, Cuba beat South Korea 7-2 and Australia routed Thailand 26-1.
