Parking fee proposal for boat harbors draws protest

Advertiser Staff

More than four dozen protesters at the Ala Wai Boat Harbor rallied today against a state plan to charge the public to park at state boat harbors.

Saying the parking fees would deny them access to a public beach that's popular with surfers and recreational users, the group sang songs, gathered petition signatures and dispensed bright red T-shirts with the slogan, "Free Beach Access — No Parking Fees."

However the DLNR issued a statement saying the state has no plans to restrict free parking at the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor's 130-stall lot at the lagoon where surfers and recreational users have parked free for years. It did say, however, it was proposing modest fees for the remainder of the harbor's parking stalls in order to deter all-day parking by those not using the beach or harbor facilities.
