Ordnance to keep Makua Military reservation closed

Advertiser Staff

Army officials say that Makua Military Reservation will probably remain closed for another month because of unexploded ordnance.

On Nov. 1 an unexploded 250-pound World War II-era bomb was found on a road at Makua.

Explosive ordnance disposal investigators have found three smaller munitions. The Army says the 250-pound bomb cannot be safely removed and must be detonated in place. The smaller munitions should be detonated at the same time, the Army says.

The Army will coordinate with state and federal authorities before any detonation takes place.

In the meantime, the reservation will remain closed to all civilian and military personnel not involved with the ordnance demolition.

Any cultural access is postponed.
