Choruses prepare festival of hymns

The Windward United Church of Christ Chancel Singers, the Hawaiian Mission Academy Chorale and the Samoan Gospel Heralds male chorus will perform in a free "Thanksgiving Festival of Hymns" at 9 a.m. Nov. 18.

The service takes place at Windward United Church of Christ, 38 Kane'ohe Bay Drive.

CANCELED CONCERT IS RESCHEDULED

A Choral Evensong concert, slated for last Sunday at Cathedral Church of St. Andrew at Queen Emma Square, was called off in darkness after rainstorms caused a power outage. It is rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. tomorrow.

Although the planned liturgy of prayer and music was not possible, the congregation last Sunday shared a few grace-filled moments of prayer and hymn as priests, choir, and the brave and faithful attendees gathered around the font by candlelight.

AUTHOR OFFERING CHURCH WORKSHOP

Victoria Castle will give an "Embodied Abundance" workshop at 1 p.m. Nov. 18 at Unity Church of Hawaii, 3608 Diamond Head Circle.

Castle, author of "The Trance of Scarcity," speaks nationally at conferences for business, women and social activism.

Castle will also be speaking at Sunday services that day.

ISRAELI OCCUPATION TO BE DISCUSSED

Claire Anastas of Bethlehem will give a free talk about the life of Palestinian Christians under the Israeli occupation.

WORKSHOP/RETREAT AT ZEN CENTER

A daylong mindfulness and vipassana workshop/retreat will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Saturday at Palolo Zen Center, 2747 Wai'oma'o Road.

The leaders will be Xuan and Thanh Huynh.

Participants will spend the day learning and practicing the art of mindful living with instruction, periods of sitting and walking meditation and discussion.

The Rev. Robert Ruhnke, author of "For Better and For Ever," will lead two free workshops on marriage:

  • 9 a.m. to noon next Saturday at St. John Apostle and Evangelist (Mililani) for couples working in parish marriage preparation programs.
