The Oceanic Time Warner Cable 2007 Honolulu Futures opens this weekend with qualifying matches at the University of Hawai'i Tennis Complex. The USTA Pro Circuit event offers a $15,000 purse and ranking points to those in the main draw.

Qualifying matches begin at 10 a.m. today through Monday. The draw will be posted Monday, with main draw matches starting at 10 a.m. Tuesday to Thursday and 11 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

There is no admission charge. American Nicholas Monroe, ranked 356th in the world, is the top seed.

Honolulu's Chris Lam (No. 630) and Ikaika Jobe (791) are both in the main draw. Wild cards were given to Hawai'i Open singles champion Dennis Lajola, from 'Aiea, and Brad Lum-Tucker, from Kaua'i. Hawai'i Open doubles champions Michael Bruggemann and Erich Chen, who are also former Kailua Night Doubles champions, were given a wild card into the doubles draw.

Players from UH and Hawai'i Pacific will attempt to qualify.

The week includes Junior Team Tennis Nite Tuesday at 5 p.m. All junior team tennis players, intermediate and high school tennis teams are invited to watch the feature match. That will be followed by pizza and on-court games run by local pros.

Schools Day will be Friday morning, with 200 elementary and intermediate students invited to participate in activities and watch pro matches.

Community Tennis Day is Nov. 17, from 9 to 11 a.m. It starts with Cardio Tennis for juniors and adults. A Pro Circuit Hawaiians exhibition follows, with semifinals after that.

WOMEN'S NIGHT DOUBLES SCHEDULED

Tennis players from 10 countries will compete in the eighth annual Lanikai Bath and Body Women's Night Doubles tournament, starting Wednesday at Kailua Racquet Club (629 Oneawa). The event is free and open to the public, with food and prizes available.

Matches start at 6 p.m. each day. The final is scheduled for Nov. 17.

Jing Jing Liu and Elwen Li, who came here from China to play for Brigham Young-Hawai'i, won last year and return with different partners.

Liu, a three-time Women's Night Doubles champion, is seeded first with BYUH graduate Gurianna Korinihona, from the Solomon Islands. Liu is a four-time All-American and two-time NCAA Division II Player of the Year who played on three NCAA championship teams, including last season's. Korinihona also played on three title teams and, like Liu, is a Seasider assistant coach now. She is a three-time finalist at Kailua.

Li, the top-ranked singles player in Division II in the preseason, is the No. 2 seed with Maggie Deng, another BYUH player from China. The duo is ranked No. 1 in doubles in the preseason.

Former WTA player Dada Joksimovic, from Serbia, is teaming with KRC pro Judy Weitz. Joksimovic grew up with U.S. Open finalist Novak Djokovic. The team is seeded third.

The fourth-seeded team is headed by Night Doubles newcomer Janalle Kaloi, oldest of the tennis playing Kaloi sisters. Janalle played for Santa Clara and is teaming with Kelly (Chan) Little, a Konawaena graduate who played for Long Beach State.

Other teams are: Hawai'i Pacific's Tinka Mihova and Lauren Shin; three-time state high school doubles champion Keawe Ayau and four-time singles champion Erin Hoe; reigning state high school champion Kristin Lim and Punahou teammate Ashley Ohira; HPU's Ingrid Cseh and Nina Mihova; University of Hawai'i players Chloe Bihag and Sophie Kobuch; and former HPU players Fluerette Houser and Loni Matsunaga.

The tournament will again be a benefit for breast cancer research. It has raised nearly $20,000 in the past. Sponsorship packages are available by contacting Kim at gouldkt@gmail.com.
