Volleyball: U.S. women sweep past South Korea

KUMAMOTO, Japan — Logan Tom had 19 points today, leading the United States to a s sweep over South Korea to remain undefeated at the volleyball Women's World Cup.

Danielle Scott-Arruda had 17 points as the Americans improved to 8-0 in the 25-21, 25-19, 25-23 win.

Honolulu's Robyn Ah Mow (McKinley, University of Hawai'i) had a block, an ace and 24 assists as the starting setter for the United States. Lindsey Berg (Punahou) also played at setter.

"We're very happy with the win today," Berg said. "We've finished the third round exactly as we wanted. Our goal was to win three games here and it didn't matter how. We now go to the fourth round with an 8-0 record and in a position to qualify (for the Olympics) and hopefully win the title. We're very happy to have taken care of business on our side."

South Korea dropped to 2-6.

The tournament features 12 teams bidding for three berths at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The men's tournament will be held in Japan from Nov. 18-Dec. 2.

European champions Italy improved to 8-0 with a 25-13, 25-21, 25-17 win over Peru (1-7) in Sapporo. Poland upset Serbia 24-26, 25-23, 25-12, 19-25, 15-10 to improve to 3-5. Serbia dropped to 6-2.

Cuba downed winless Thailand 25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 25-13 to improve to 6-2.

The tournament ends Saturday.
