Rainbows win WAC soccer, automatic NCAA berth

Advertiser Staff

Sophomore Emma Makepa-Foley scored in the 58th-minute to lift Hawai'i to its first Western Athletic Conference soccer tournament title with a 1-0 victory over Fresno State and its first automatic berth into the NCAA Championships.

Makepa-Foley scored off a free kick from 15 yards out as the ball bounced off the left post and into the back of the net. It was Makepa-Foley's third goal of the season.

The Rainbow Wahine (15-4-2), led by goalkeeper Kori Lu, did not allow a goal in either match of this season's WAC Tournament at Boise, Idaho. Backup goalkeeper Jessica McClure played the entire second half for Hawai'i, making five saves.

Rainbow Wahine players Taryn Fukuroku, Jessica Domingo and Koren Takeyama were named to the all-tournament team while Chelsea Deptula was named tournament MVP.

The NCAA Tournament brackets will be announced tomorrow.
