Advertiser Staff
In honor of the U.S. Marine Corps' 232nd birthday on Nov. 10, the Battleship Missouri Memorial will offer complimentary admission and 10 percent off retail purchases to all active-duty, reserve and retired U.S. Marine Corps personnel through Nov. 18. In addition, their immediate family members will receive a 50 percent discount on admission and enjoy 10 percent off retail purchases.
To take advantage of the offer, qualified visitors must present a valid Marine Corps ID at the Missouri's ticket window at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor.
Formal commemoration of the Marine Corps' birthday began in 1921. Nov. 10 was identified as the Marine Corps' birthday because it was on that date in 1775 that the Second Continental Congress resolved to raise two battalions of Continental Marines.
On Oct. 21, 1921, Major Edwin McClellan, Officer-in-Charge, Historical Section, Headquarters Marine Corps, sent a memorandum to Major General Commandant John A. Lejeune suggesting that Nov. 10 be declared a Marine Corps holiday celebrated throughout the Corps. Accordingly, on Nov. 1, 1921, General Lejeune issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921.
The Battleship Missouri Memorial is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is $16 per adult and $8 per child 4-12. Military and kama'aina (local resident) rates are $10 per adult and $5 per child. All military in uniform are granted free admission at the gate.
