CFB: Upstate NY teams combine for 142 points

Associated Press

UTICA, N.Y. — Two upstate New York football teams combined for 142 points in four overtimes, setting the NCAA all-division record for most points.

Hartwick College beat Utica College 72-70 Saturday, breaking the record for the second time in three weeks.

On Oct. 27, Weber State defeated Portland State 73-68 — in regulation — to break a 38-year-old mark. Portland State is coached by Jerry Glanville, former University of Hawai'i defensive coordinator.

The game between Utica and Hartwick featured a combined 20 touchdowns, 1,042 yards of total offense and 52 first downs, according to the Utica College sports information office.

Hartwick head coach Mark Carr said he didn't even know the record fell until he heard it on ESPN that night.

"I kind of laughed at it a little bit," Carr said toay. "We were focusing on just winning the game and doing whatever it took."

Navy and North Texas set the major-college record on Saturday, too, with 136 points in Navy's 74-62 win. Navy quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada, a Kapolei High School graduate, threw for 108 yards and a touchdown efore leaving with a bruised right knee.

The previous record of 136 points was set in 1968 when North Park beat North Central 104-32 in a Division III game.

The victory sent Hartwick, the Empire 8 Conference champions, into the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Utica, which had averaged only 14 points, also set a record for most points scored by a losing team, eclipsing the 66 scored by Western New Mexico, in a two-overtime loss to Fort Lewis in 2002
