Roadway near Waimea Bay to reopen at 5 a.m.

Advertiser Staff

Repair work on a downed utility pole near Waimea Bay will continue overnight but Hawaiian Electric Co. plans to stop work on the road at 5 a.m. so Kamehameha Highway can be reopened to accommodate rush-hour traffic.

The pole was knocked down in a single-vehicle crash tonight at 6:47 p.m., forcing the closure of Kamehameha Highway to traffic in the area of Waimea Falls Park.

The accident knocked out power to 280 customers in Waimea Valley and along Pupukea Road, said HECO spokesman Darren Pai. Power was restored to all but 34 customers by 8:33 p.m., Pai said.

The roadway was closed at 6:50 p.m.

No injuries were reported.
