Sailing ship that makes stops in Hawaii has no home

Associated Press

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — A 122-foot sailing ship that takes school kids and Boy Scouts on nautical field trips has no home to call its own.

The Privateer Lynx, a $3 million schooner, had been docked next to the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum, but the museum recently moved to a spot where the water is not deep enough to hold the ship. The old dock was then demolished.

The Lynx takes kids on maritime adventures designed to teach them about sailing and American history. It's been traveling up and down the Pacific Coast and Hawai'i since it lost its permanent resting spot.

Jeffrey Woods, director of the Lynx Educational Foundation, said he approached the Irvine Co., which owns the area where the Lynx was formerly docked, about creating a new home. But Irvine Co. spokesman Bill Rams says there's no space for the tall ship.
