John Jackson, 36, of Honolulu has been identified as the man who died Saturday after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while he was hitching a motorcycle trailer to the back of a Mustang on Nimitz Highway between Ohohia Street and Lagoon Drive.

Jackson died after being hit by a van that lost control and hit him, an 18-year-old man who was helping him, and a woman who was inside the Mustang, police said. Police are searching for the van's unidentified driver, who ran away.

Also injured were the 18-year-old man and the woman passenger. Jackson and the 18-year-old are from Hickam Air Force Base. Their car was parked to the right of the westbound side of the highway, about two-tenths of a mile west of Ohohia Street when the accident happened at 3:40 a.m. Saturday.

Police have opened a hit-and-run investigation. The unidentified driver was last seen running away from the gold 2002 Chevrolet van.

Speed is considered a factor in the accident, but it's not known if alcohol was involved. Police ask anyone with information to call 529-3499.

The official cause of Jackson's death is pending the results of an autopsy.
