HAWAII BRIEFS
Leeward water in short supply

Advertiser Staff

The Board of Water Supply is asking the public to conserve water from Ko Olina to Makaha because of a break in a 24-inch main.

No residents were without water, board officials said.

A BWS spokesman said last night the main should be repaired sometime this morning but that traffic would probably be affected for most of today.

Police were managing traffic around the rupture with contraflow lanes yesterday.

The break, which is 200 feet east of the Ko Olina overpass, was reported at 1:30 p.m. yesterday, said Moani Wright-Van Alst, water agency spokeswoman.

Only essential water use will be allowed in this area until the break is repaired, she said. That means personal hygiene and cooking only, no car-washing, yard-watering or sidewalk-cleaning.

1 DEAD, 1 HURT IN BIG ISLAND CRASH

Big Island police said that a pickup truck ran off the road and rolled over near the 15-mile marker on Route 270 early yesterday in North Kohala, killing one person and seriously injuring another.

The accident was reported at 1:49 a.m. The injured person was flown to North Hawaii Community Hospital.

No other information was available.

8,000 GALLONS OF SEWAGE SPILLED

A plastic bag filled with rags caused more than 8,000 gallons of sewage to spill out of a manhole at 2432 Wilhelmina Rise yesterday.

City officials said the spilled effluent did not reach the ocean.
