Maui events celebrate anti-smoking law

Advertiser Staff

The Maui Tobacco-Free Partnership is celebrating the first anniversary of the state's "smoke-free law" by hosting two events Thursday aimed at reducing the county's smoking rate, reported at 18.7 percent of the population.

As part of the Great American Smokeout, smokers can "pitch the pack" from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Safeway stores in Kihei and Kahului or at the Maui Mall's Center Court and receive information on how to quit smoking.

A Smoke-Free Law Celebration will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at Tiffany's Bar and Grill in Wailuku, with residents sharing their personal stories of life before and after the new smoke-free law, which bans smoking in all public places. There will be pupu, a no-host bar and cake. The cost is $10 per person. Reservations are required; call 808-573-6554.

Students from Maui Waena Intermediate School in Kahului will hold "Pitch the Pack" sign-waving events from 1:15 to 2 p.m. tomorrow and 7:15 to 7:45 a.m. Thursday to encourage motorists to give up their cigarettes in exchange for a more healthful lifestyle.

The Molokai Tobacco-Free Partnership is celebrating the first anniversary of the state's "smoke-free law" with a carnival from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Keawea Park in Kaunakakai.

The family-oriented event includes free chili dinners, cotton candy, face painting and game booths. For more information, contact Jossette Mawae-Mollena at 808-553-3623.
