Paula Fuga on PBS' 'Long Story Short' tonight

Advertiser Staff

Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winning local soul singer Paula Fuga discusses a childhood that included living on the beach and being teased for homelessness in the current edition of "Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox," PBS Hawaii's newest, locally-produced program, 7:30 tonight on PBS Hawaii.

Fuga, who first received notice for her appearance on "American Idol," has parlayed her musical talents into an up-and-coming career highlighted by her successful 2006 debut album, "Lilikoi." Lauded as Most Promising Artist in this year's Hoku awards, Fuga has performed with Jack Johnson and is scheduled to sing with Sheryl Crow.

After a difficult childhood, Paula realizes the importance of a good support structure and good choices. At 28, she is establishing a nonprofit organization, the Lilikoi Foundation, to support women who are struggling.

"I was very fortunate to have positive adult role models in my life, namely my grandparents, my aunties," Fuga said, in a press release. "I feel so fortunate to have had those people in my life that set me straight and said, 'No, that's not okay, that's unacceptable.'"
