Contraflowing traffic resumes near Waimea Bay

Advertiser Staff

Hawaiian Electric has finished making repairs at 6:54 a.m. today to a downed power pole in Waimea Bay that was damaged in a single-car accident last night, a HECO spokesman said this morning. Hawaiian Telcom still has some crews on the scene.

Traffic on Kamehameha Highway near Waimea Bay is being contraflowed.

This is the second time the road has been reopened this morning to contraflow traffic. It originally was opened at 5 a.m., but was closed to traffic in both directions at 6 a.m. for more repairs. Police reopened one lane to help with the rush hour traffic at 6:45 a.m.

About 280 customers in Waimea Valley and along Pupukea Road lost electrical power for about two hours when a utility pole fell following a car accident at 6:47 p.m. last night.

Police said a utility pole fell on the Hale'iwa side of Waimea Bay, causing lines to fall and come in contact with a car.

There were also reports of a transformer problem due to the accident. Power was restored to all but 34 customers by 8:33 p.m., HECO spokesman Darren Pai said.
