HCC campus to hold Makahiki Games tomorrow

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu Community College will tomorrow hold its second annual Makahiki Games.

A team of students, faculty and staff will compete in four events: stone-rolling (ulumaika), dart-sliding (moa pahe'e), spear-sliding (ihe pahe'e), and spear-throwing ('o'o ihe).

Cultural experts will also present a lecture on makahiki and its origins as an ancient Hawaiian time of peace and festivity. Running from late October or early November through late February or early March war was kapu. People celebrated the harvest by engaging in leisure time activities such as sports, dance and music.

Tomorrow's event — set to begin noon on the HCC lawn near the Berlin Wall monument — is being held as part of the Native Hawaiian Center's continuing 'Imi Na'auao lecture Series and International Education Week at HCC.
