Hawai'i quarterback Colt Brennan yesterday said he feels he is "close to 100" percent, has not experienced any adverse side effects from a concussion suffered Saturday, and wants to play in Friday's nationally televised road game against Nevada.
Head coach June Jones said Brennan will be held out of today's practice as a precaution, and his condition will be evaluated tonight.
The Warriors practice tomorrow morning, and depart for Reno in the afternoon. Asked about being added to the 64-player travel roster, Brennan said: "I'm going. The way I feel right now — I haven't had any symptoms — I have to think that I'd at least be in the discussion to play on Friday."
He acknowledged a decision will be based on long-term ramifications and the rest period needed to minimize a recurrence.
Brennan said Jones, quarterback coach Dan Morrison and the team's trainers "are taking (care of) all of the precautionary things for me and my future, and my health is their main concern. They're going to go over everything they can, and turn over every stone, and make sure they do the smartest thing for me and my health."
While scrambling, Brennan was injured when he was hit by Fresno State linebacker Marcus Riley. Brennan said the combination of being struck on the helmet and falling hard on the FieldTurf made his condition worse.
"I think if my head didn't hit the ground the way that it did, I still would have been woozy, shaken up, taken a good hit, but I wouldn't have been the way that I was," Brennan said.
He said he does not know if he was unconscious. "I don't remember it," he said. "But it seems like I saw my legs moving right after I hit the ground. Obviously if I was out, I wasn't out for very long."
Brennan said a neck ache was not a concern. He said it was "sore like it would after any game. ... It may be a little sorer than normal. It's not a pain that's not normal."
He added: "Because my body's been feeling like normal, and I've been feeling so good, that's why I really think I can get ready to play this Friday."
But Jones already has put in place a contingency plan. Jones said Tyler Graunke is Brennan's immediate replacement. The No. 3 quarterback, Inoke Funaki, received most of the snaps during team drills yesterday.
"He hasn't had many reps since training camp," Jones said of Funaki. "If he has to play, I'm trying to sneak a few for him."
In UH's practice format, Brennan receives four snaps for every two for Graunke. In team drills, Funaki receives "mental reps" in which he observes but does not participate.
"It was the first time I took reps in that period," Funaki said. "I think that shows confidence I might be able to help out. I don't know what Colt's situation is, if he's going to play or not. If he doesn't then, Tyler goes in. Then I would be one play away. I have to be ready."
Brennan, Graunke and Funaki are the only three quarterbacks on the active roster. Jake Santos and Shane Austin are redshirting. Kiran Kepo'o, who also is redshirting, is recovering from injuries suffered in a bicycle incident.
"I'm the last line of defense ... or offense," Funaki said.
Graunke said he is preparing as if he will play extensively.
"I'll be ready if Colt can't go, that's for sure," Graunke said. "Even if he can, he might be a little sensitive toward his concussion. I'll have to be ready either way."
Graunke said his only concern is Nevada's chilly forecast.
"I'll have to keep myself warm on the sidelines," Graunke said.
RECEIVERS AILING
Right slotback Ryan Grice-Mullins was the only starting receiver to practice yesterday.
Left slotback Davone Bess, who is suffering from flu-like symptoms, had a doctor's appointment, receivers coach Ron Lee said.
Left wideout Jason Rivers has a sore neck, and right wideout C.J. Hawthorne has tightness in his right hamstring and groin.
All are expected to play against Nevada.
Rivers said he was injured while trying to field a high on-side kick against Fresno State.
"The dude kind of speared me in the back of my neck," Rivers said. "I wasn't looking at the dude. Somebody hitting you full blast when you're not looking, especially that kind of hit, it's sore."
He said his neck "tightened up" over the weekend. But he said: "I'm going to play. It's not something that is going to hold me out. It's just a stiff neck."
Hawthorne said he felt tightness in the second quarter. At the time, UH was leading 31-7.
"I didn't pop it, but it was close," Hawthorne said. "I felt a real tightness. I told the coaches it would be OK if I didn't go anymore."
