Waialua's Abubo wins women's pro surfing title

Advertiser Staff

Megan Abubo of Waialua won the women's division of the Reef Hawaiian Pro surfing contest today.

The final day of the event was run today in tricky conditions at Hale'iwa Ali'i Beach. Wave-face heights ranged from 6 to 12 feet, but strong winds made it difficult for the surfers.

Abubo scored a perfect 10 during her second round heat in the morning, and then kept the momentum all day.

In the four-woman final, she received a two-wave total score of 12.33. She took the lead with around 10 minutes remaining when she received a score of 8.5.

Abubo received $4,500 for the victory.

Defending world champion Layne Beachley of Australia placed second. Karina Petroni of Florida was third, and Leilani Gryde of the Big Island was fourth.

Shark-attack survivor Bethany Hamilton of Kaua'i was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

The Reef Hawaiian Pro is the first event for the women in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series. The next event is the Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach, Nov. 25 to Dec. 6.

There are still two days of competition remaining in the men's division of the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Hale'iwa Ali'i Beach.
