U.S. domestic mail rates return for 2 Pacific nations
Associated Press
WASHINGTON Mail to Micronesia and the Marshall Islands in the Pacific will be delivered at the domestic U.S. postage rates starting Monday. The Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of the Marshall Islands are former trust territories of the United States and as such received their mail at the U.S. domestic rate until Jan. 8, 2006, when international rates began to be phased in.
However, the Postal Service said technical and other problems had surfaced for the countries and the U.S. rates are being restored.
The two nations comprise about 630 islands with a total population of nearly 170,000.
"This change will expand the Asia-Pacific market for U.S. mailers and shippers," said postal senior vice president Paul Vogel. "At the same time, it will help these two island nations grow their economies."
