South Korea is awarding its Citizen's Medal of Merit (Mokryongjang) today to the Interim Dean of UH Manoa's School of Pacific and Asian Studies, Edward Shultz.

Shultz will receive his award in a ceremony at Honolulu's Korean Consulate, in recognition of his contributions to the development of U.S.-Korea relations and his support of the Korean community in Hawaii, a UH news release said.

Shultz is professor of Asian studies at UH Manoa and former director of the Center for Korean Studies. In addition to currently serving as interim dean of the School of Pacific and Asian Studies, he is also interim Assistant Vice Chancellor of International and Exchange Programs.

Shultz is a specialist in Korean history and is the author of, among other works, Generals and Scholars: Military Rule in Medieval Korea (University of Hawaii Press, 2000). He helped organize the 2003 observance of the centennial of the beginning of Korean immigration to the United States, and is active in community organizations such as the Korean American Foundation.
