College: Fire closes NCAA headquarters, museum

Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA museum and headquarters closed for the day because of a small fire, and some exhibits at the NCAA Hall of Champions sustained water damage from sprinklers.

The fire was reported this morning and apparently was caused by an electrical problem, Indianapolis fire Capt. Gregg Harris said.

Damage was confined to part of the museum's second floor. The area included interactive, electronic exhibits and displays on tennis and volleyball.

"There's individual exhibits, and those got drenched," NCAA senior vice president Dennis Cryder said.

Officials were trying to determine the extent of damage.

The organization closed the adjoining headquarters as a precaution because the buildings share a ventilation system, Cryder said. The sprinkler system left 3 inches of water in some spots, with an entrance area to a nostalgic basketball court sustaining some damage, he said.

The National Federation of State High School Associations headquarters, which is connected to the NCAA buildings, was not affected by the fire.
