Advertiser Staff

Shark-attack survivor Bethany Hamilton of Kaua'i was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the women's division of the Reef Hawaiian Pro surfing contest today at Hale'iwa Ali'i Beach.

The final day of the contest is being run today. Wave-face heights are in the 6- to 12-foot range.

Hamilton, 17, won her second-round heat in the morning, but could not advance out of her quarterfinal heat in the afternoon.

She had a high-scoring wave of 8.83 (out of 10) in her second round victory.

In the quarterfinals, she caught only three waves, and received a total score of 5.07 for her best two waves. She placed fourth in her heat, meaning she will finish in a tie for 13th place overall for the contest.

Hamilton lost her left arm in a shark attack off Kaua'i in 2003.

Hawai'i surfers advancing to the semifinals were Megan Abubo, Melanie Bartels and Leilani Gryde.

The final heat is expected to start around 3:30 p.m.

The Reef Hawaiian Pro is the first event in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series.
