Resort opening Adventure Center

Advertiser Staff

Kapalua Resort said it will open a Mountain Outpost and Adventure Center in January, with a portion of proceeds to fund Pu'u Kukui Watershed Preserve on Maui.

The new Mountain Outpost will feature a zipline system with eight dual-track ziplines, two suspension bridges, a comprehensive high ropes challenge course and a four-station climbing tower. The eight ziplines span a total of two miles, including one that's 2,200 feet long.

The facility, scheduled to open Jan. 7, has been designed to minimize impact to the natural environment.

The new facilities will create 40 new jobs, the resort said.

Ziplines enable guests to view plant and bird life high above the ground with minimal disruption to the ecosystem, officials said. On the ground, guides keep guests on paths specially designed to minimize erosion while avoiding sensitive areas.

Officials said it provides a safe, comfortable, enjoyable experience for virtually all ages and fitness levels that will suit everyone's interest. Additionally, much of the experience is handicapped-accessible.

Kapalua Resort has pledged 10 percent of the profits generated by the Adventure Center to the Pu'u Kukui Watershed Preserve, which is home to several of the world's rarest plants and insects as well as a pristine tropical bog and delicate ecosystems.
