CaneFires, BeachBoys triumph

Ian Gac and Chad Tracy each drove in two runs to support the strong pitching of Keisaku Itokazu as the West Oahu CaneFires beat the Honolulu Sharks, 6-1, yesterday in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Park.

Gac went 2 for 3, including a sacrifice fly, while Tracy went 1 for 4, hitting his seventh homer of the season for the CaneFires (12-20). Leadoff batter Craig Gentry was 2 for 3, scoring three runs. All three players are from the Texas Rangers organization.

Itokazu (5-1) allowed a run, four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. Michael Cooper pitched 2 1/3 perfect innings for his first save.

Shingo Matsuzaki gave up six runs, six hits and three walks in six innings, while striking out eight for the Sharks (15-17).

In the late game, starter Kenichi Matsuoka and two relievers teamed on a six-hitter as the Waikiki BeachBoys beat the North Shore Honu, 5-1.

Matsuoka, who did not figure in the decision, worked 5 2/3 scoreless innings while giving up four hits and striking out six.

Winner Harold Williams allowed a run and two hits in one inning, and Brant Rustich finished with 2 1/3 hitless innings.


TENNIS

LAM WINS OPENER

Sixth-seeded Chris Lam of Honolulu won his first-round match, but Ikaika Jobe of Honolulu lost yesterday in the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Honolulu Futures event at the University of Hawai'i Tennis Complex.

Lam beat Troy Gillham of Austria, 6-3, 7-5, while seventh-seeded Chris Wettengel of the U.S. defeated Jobe, 6-2, 7-6 (4).

In doubles play, Jobe teamed with Kaua'i's Brad Lum-Tucker to beat UH's Jeff Fitch and Spence Mendoza, 6-4, 6-2. Four other teams with Hawai'i ties lost — Lam and his brother, Carter; Mikael Maata and Jan-Axel Tribler; Hendrik Bode and Lennart Maack; and Sascha Heinemann and Andreas Weber.


MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

MORENO SUCCUMBS

Chad Reiner of Nebraska defeated Kalihi's Mark Moreno in the main event of the X-1 World Events card Friday at the Blaisdell Arena.

Reiner won it in the second round when he applied an arm lock, prompting Moreno to submit.

Reiner improved to 15-3; Moreno fell to 12-8-2. The bout was in the 170-pound division.

In the semi-main event, Hilo's Kana Hyatt defeated Kane'ohe's Ed Newalu to win the X-1 organization's championship in the 145-pound division.

Hyatt applied a rear-naked choke on Newalu midway through the first round to earn the submission victory.
