UH vows to beef up security for Boise game

The University of Hawai'i quickly pledged to improve the environment for Boise State fans at Aloha Stadium next week following complaints from Fresno State fans about abusive treatment suffered during last Saturday's game.

In a widely circulated posting on www.barkboard.com, a message board for Fresno State fans, one fan claimed, "... fights, alcohol, lax security and thug fans have turned Aloha Stadium into what is likely the most horrible game day atmosphere in college football." The posting came with a picture of police in the stands.

UH has scheduled a conference call with media from Fresno and Boise today to discuss the issue and announce steps to improve the situation, an athletic department spokesman said.

The action comes after Boise fans planning to make the trip for the Nov. 23 game expressed concern to the Broncos' administration, which talked to UH, an athletic department spokesman said. Boise has been allotted 500 tickets, but it was not immediately known how many would be used.

Fresno State sports information director Steve Weakland said of the alleged incidents, it was "...the first I've heard of it."

Paul Swearengin of KFIG radio in Fresno, who attended the game, said: "It wasn't like oh, my gosh, this is the worst place we've ever been but there were a couple of incidents and people were upset about beer being thrown at the cheerleaders."

Swearengin added: "There was talk on the booster bus as we (left the stadium) that it had gotten a little ugly. The reaction of Fresno State fans was that they felt June Jones impugned Fresno fans a few years ago (over allegations of a screwdriver being thrown from the stands at Fresno), so it was like, talk about the fans in our stadium, this was a bad experience for some of them."

UH athletic director Herman Frazier spoke with Boise State athletic director Gene Bleymaier yesterday to review plans, which officials said include: "heightened security plans" and appeals to UH fans from Jones and the athletic department — in radio, TV and newspaper spots — to "demonstrate good sportsmanship."

The fan behavior issue resurfaced a year after UH and stadium officials had threatened to ban alcohol sales if incidents, which have been prevalent in the past, continued.
