Pauoa's Green House holding 4 workshops on Saturday

The Green House, Betty Gearen's eco-education center that is also her environmentally friendly home in Pauoa, is holding four workshops for keiki and adults on Saturday.

Keiki Explorer Club, 10 a.m.-noon

Kids spend the morning with Miss Bev and Miss Betty exploring the life cycle of a butterfly, and learn the importance of butterflies as beneficial insects and plant helpers. Each keiki will receive a caterpillar and food to take home so they can experience the joy of watching a caterpillar turn into a butterfly before their eyes. For children 4 and up.

Fee: $12 per parent/child team. Advanced registration required.

Home brewing with Hunter, 10 a.m.-noon

Permaculture designer Hunter Heaivilin will demonstrate how to mix common ingredients to fertilize your garden organically. Various types of fertilizers will be covered as well as plant based flora foods. The class will make and apply homemade fertilizers that are found in the yard and kitchen plus explore simple methods of making natural pest controls.

Fee: $15. Advanced registration required.

Make a rain barrel catchment system, 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Environmental engineer Jeremai Cann will demonstrate how to make a rain barrel catchment system for your home. Collection of water from rooftop runoff can provide an ample supply of chlorine-free soft water.

Natural green cleaning recipes, 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Whip up a batch of soap and stir up simple cleaning recipes that are safe, effective, inexpensive, and that are made from ingredients that are probably already in your kitchen cupboards. Bring empty spray bottles and containers to fill with samples of the cleaners.
