The Hawai'i State Advisory Committee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights today voted 8-6 to not take a position on the Akaka bill, a measure now before Congress that could lead to federal recognition of Native Hawaiians. One member of the 16-person commission was not present. Chairman Michael Lilly did not vote.
Those who supported taking a position said the committee owed it to the public. Those opposed said no analysis had been done.
