Owner escapes before fire destroys home on Big Island

Fire destroyed a single-story house on the Big Island yesterday, causing $150,000 in damage but leaving the single occupant uninjured.The American Red Cross is helping the resident, who escaped before the 1,400-square foot wooden structure was engulfed in flames.
Firefighters on the Big Island said the fire was created when the occupant was welding a house pipe that caused the interior wall to catch fire.
Firefighters received the call of a structure fire at 16-1418 Uhini-Ana Road, Hawaiian Acres in Mountain View at 9:30 a.m. and the first unit was on the scene by 9:42 a.m.
The fire was deemed under control by 10:30 a.m. and extinguished by 11 a.m.
Six fire units responded to the call.
