Baseball: Glavine gets official offer from Braves

By John Delcos
The (Westchester, N.Y.) Journal News

Pitcher Tom Glavine has his inevitable contract offer from the Atlanta Braves.

The Braves offered the 300-game winner a one-year deal speculated to be in the $10 million range.

Glavine's agent, Gregg Clifton, said "our intention is to prepare a counter-offer," which he planned to present the Braves later tonight.

New York Mets general manager Omar Minaya said he doesn't believe it is a foregone conclusion Glavine will re-sign with the team he broke in with in 1987. Glavine rejected a $13 million option with the Mets a week after the season ended to consider his options.

Several times during the season Glavine said his decision to pitch in 2008 was contingent on his family's wishes, which Clifton reiterated today.

Glavine went 13-8 last season with a 4.45 ERA, but left with a sour taste when he lasted one-third of an inning in losing the season finale, 8-1 to the Florida Marlins, that eliminated the Mets from playoff contention.

Glavine was the only Met starter last season to throw 200 innings, and Minaya said he would look to replace that in both the free agent and trade markets.
