NFL: Texans RB Green won't play against Saints

Associated Press

HOUSTON — Texans running back Ahman Green won't play Sunday against New Orleans because of a swollen left knee.

Coach Gary Kubiak was optimistic early in the week that rest during the bye week would allow Green to play. Kubiak said he wasn't sure how long Green will be out.

"He has not responded here over the course of the last couple of weeks in the rest we have given him," Kubiak said today. "He came out, did a little bit yesterday. It did not respond. The knee swelled this morning, so he will be down and we'll work from there."

Green, who signed a four-year, $23 million contract in March, has 70 carries for 260 yards this season. Ron Dayne, who had 21 carries for 122 yards against Oakland, will start in his place.

Green's knee has bothered him since Week 2 and he's missed three games and played sparingly in the other four since. Green's stepfather died last month.

"He wants to be out there and help the team win," Dayne said. "That's the reason they brought him here, so it's kind of tough on him. He's been having a tough year period, with his dad and just things with his family."
